Using the MAD-GLAD-SAD approach, determine the tone of your book. You can classify your whole book, or a portion you read this week during class. Determine first the overall tone, is it mad, glad, or sad. Then choose the word from the worksheet that best fits the tone you have chosen. Be specific about why you chose this particular word to describe your choice for tone. As always be sure to include the title of your book.

I would say that the overall tone of my book, The Dead and the Gone, would be SAD. The main character Alex is sad and mad at the moon for being pushed closer to earth and causing all of things that destroys the future he once dreamt about and for destroying his family. Throughout the book you see how he gets really angry at times and sometimes takes it out on his sisters. Also, you see all the terrible things that they have to go through just to stay alive. The word that I think the tone is, is SOLEMN. I would say it's solemn because all the things that Alex has to do just to keep his two sisters alive and the sacrifices he has to make just so they can survive. Alex also, has to take a lot more responsibility because neither of his parents are around to help them. I also chose solemn because there really isn't any really positive things that go on in their lives and Alex is always very serious throughout the whole book. This is why I think solemn is the tone of this book.

Pick out a passage that strikes you as particularly profound, interesting, makes you think or upsets you. If the passage is really long then focus on one smaller part, the essence of it. Why of all the words and passages in this book, did you choose this one? What is the author's message, and what does it mean to you? If this question makes you think of a book you have previously read, use that one. Always be sure to include the title of your book in the answer.

In the book I'm reading, Some Girls Are, one passage stands out as profound to me. The passage is "Hallowell High: You're either someone or you're not." I chose this passage because I think that some people in high school believe that they have to be someone. Also, that there are some people who believe that it isn't cool if you aren't someone. I think that this passage could be easily relatable to any one who has ever been to high school because there is always those girls/boys who everyone knows and hates, but deep down they wish that they were one of them. I also think that people want to be known so they don't get teased or picked on by the other kids. I think that the author's message is that in high school you are either that super popular person that everybody hates, but secretly wants to be, or you are one of those people that just fades into the background of everything. Also, that if you are someone there are certain things that you have to give up in order to be that person everyone knows.

What would life be like if you were best friends with the protagonist of your book? What kind of life does he or she lead? Would this be a positive or negative relationship? Would your family and friends approve of this person? Be specific.

The book I'm reading is called "Life as We Knew It." If I was firends with the protagonist, Miranda, it would be a strained friendship, because of the all the horrible things that are happening in the world with the moon being closer to Earth. She leads a hard life because she has to help her family to get through these tough times with the moon being closer to Earth, food and oil being so scarce, no electricity, and extremley cold weather. This would be a positive and negative relationship. It would be positive because we could talk to each other about everything that has been going on and be there for each other to lean on. It would be negative because it would be hard to see each other and talk to each other with the air being cloged with ash form the volcanos and it being really cold and not safe to go outside alone due to gangs and violence. My friends and family would approve of her because she is kind, understanding, and cares for all of her friends and family. It would be nice to have a friend like Miranda if this really did happen to us.
